The position of the Grand Vizier is among the most powerful, and the most dangerous to it’s holder. The current Vizier is a man named Mahdi who, like all Viziers before him, is a eunuch. In his mid-40’s now the rotund Vizier was a favorite of the former Caliph and as such managed to survive the intrigues of court through his own abilities and the assistance of the Caliph. The Grand Vizier is one of the three most powerful people in the city, with his position depending a great deal on the strength and weakness of the Caliph and Sultan. There are records of the past where immensely powerful Viziers have essentially ruled the city single-handedly, though far more often the Vizier is the position of the fall guy for when things go poorly. Many Viziers have seen their careers, and lives, cut short when a project being worked on by the city did not go as planned or when a particularly bad riot threatened to break out. Still, despite these risks the ability to control the courts of the Caliph and Sultan themselves is well worth it.
Mahdi was cut before he came of age, and thus maintains an airy and high voice that seems an ill fit for his rotund body. Nonetheless he knows his job well and even if he is little more than a servant to the Caliph and Sultan, he knows that such a positions still places him above most others and he uses such to great advantage.
